50 Years of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Big Top at Folklife Festival

Ever dreamed of running away to join the circus? Well until July 9, 2017, you can try it out for free at the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian’s Folklife Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Held each year for a week and a half around the Fourth of July, the Folklife Festival aims to “promote greater understanding and sustainability of cultural heritage across the United States and around the world through research, education, and community engagement.”

This year, the festival focuses on Circus Arts and explores the 300 years of American circus culture. Acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, and clowns from circus troops across the country put on shows and exhibits while interacting with festivalgoers to bring their craft to life, both in the ring and behind the scenes. Attend a performance in the 1-ring Big Top, sit in on real life Circus School as performers practice their craft, or chat with members of the circus community at the Circus Stories stage.

Even if you can’t make it to this year’s Folklife Festival, it is well worth planning a visit in the future. All events and shows are free and food stalls sell dishes related to whatever the year’s themes may be. There’s also an extensive Market Place where toys, books, clothing, and music are on sale. In past years, themes have included national cultures, such as Peru, Bhutan, Haiti, Scotland, and Oman; regional cultures, such as Appalachia, the Mekong River Delta, and Asian Pacific Americans; and institutional cultures, such as the Peace Corps and NASA.

The official Festival blog indicates that the 2018 program will highlight the vibrant culture and traditions of Catalonia.
